Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a highly varied condition, presenting a range of symptoms that differ greatly among individuals.  Commonly recognized characteristics include difficulty establishing eye contact, communication challenges, sensory sensitivities and a focus on specific interests.  However, ASD also encompasses less visible symptoms such as heightened emotional responses, perseverative thinking and executive dysfunction.

ASD may appear in early childhood, manifested in reduced eye contact or non-responsiveness to one's own name.  Other indicators, such as  masking behaviors, sensory aversions, difficulty understanding abstract language, incongruent facial expressions, rigidity, repetitive behaviors and subtle social challenges, may emerge later in life.  Individuals with ASD may exhibit an array of intellectual abilities, from learning difficulties to exceptional talents in certain areas alongside challenges in others.

As a clinical psychologist, I have an in-depth understanding of ASD’s diverse manifestations and am skilled at recognizing the unique challenges and barriers faced by individuals (and their families) with ASD. I emphasize the importance of highlighting both the strengths of clients with ASD and advocate for a diagnostic and treatment approach that respects their individuality rather than focusing on deficits.  I offer tools and strategies as options, not merely treatments, aiming to enhance clients' overall quality of life.  By working closely with clients and their families, I create tailored treatment plans that address specific needs and concerns. Together, we can work towards improving communication, social skills and overall well-being.
